Marketing and AI terms, explained plainly.
What is the Marca glossary?
The Marca glossary defines the terms that matter in modern marketing and communications, from GEO and agentic marketing to UGC and transcreation, in plain language with examples from the Gulf. Marca is a UAE-based marketing and communications agency where AI agent teams run day-to-day marketing and senior people set the direction and approve everything that goes public.
- Advertiser Permit (UAE)
The UAE Advertiser Permit is the permit, now issued by the National Media Authority (formerly the UAE Media Council), that individuals need before publishing paid or unpaid advertising content on social media or other digital platforms from within the UAE. It has been enforced since 1 February 2026. People promoting their own business on their own account are exempt.
- AEO (answer engine optimisation)
AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is structuring content so that search engines and AI assistants can lift a direct answer from it. It usually means question-led headings, a short answer at the top of each page, and FAQ content marked up with structured data.
- Agentic marketing
Agentic marketing is marketing in which AI agents carry out tasks from start to finish, such as research, drafting, checking, scheduling and reporting, rather than only suggesting ideas. People set the goals, supervise the agents and approve the results before anything is published or spent.
- Agentic SDR
An agentic SDR is an AI sales development agent that replies to enquiries, qualifies them against agreed criteria, follows up and books meetings for a sales team. It works from approved messaging, within limits people set, and hands qualified prospects to humans to close.
- AI agent
An AI agent is software that works towards a goal through several steps on its own: it reads a brief, uses tools, produces work, checks it against rules and hands it on. Unlike a chatbot answering one prompt, an agent completes a task, within limits people set.
- AI agent team
An AI agent team is a group of AI agents, each with one role, working together towards shared goals from the same brief. In marketing, a team might include strategy, copy, design, social, search and quality-check agents, with each output passed to the next agent and then to a person.
- AI visibility
AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants mention an organisation when people ask questions relevant to it. It is measured by running a fixed set of prompts across assistants each month and recording mentions, accuracy and the sources cited.
- AI-powered communication agency
An AI-powered communication agency is an agency that uses AI agents for much of the production and operational work of marketing and communications, such as research, drafting, versioning, scheduling and reporting, while people own strategy, quality, relationships and every public decision. Clients buy outcomes rather than software.
- Autonomy charter
An autonomy charter is a published set of rules stating what AI agents may do on their own, what needs approval from a senior person, what only the client can approve, and what is never done. It makes AI use in marketing transparent and accountable to clients and the public.
- Brand memory
Brand memory is the brief, brand guidelines and approved material that AI agents work from when they produce content for a brand. It typically covers tone of voice, key messages, terminology, visual rules and topics to avoid, and is agreed with the client at the start of an engagement and updated as it develops.
- Community management
Community management is building lasting relationships with an organisation's audience through regular, two-way conversation on social channels and other platforms. It goes beyond moderation to include engaging followers, recognising regular contributors and feeding what the audience says back into the content plan.
- Content calendar
A content calendar is a schedule of planned content organised by date, channel, theme and format. It lets teams approve content in advance, align posts with campaigns and seasonal moments such as Ramadan, Eid and national days, and keep output steady across channels.
- Earned media
Earned media is coverage and attention an organisation receives without paying for it directly, such as press articles, interviews, reviews and organic shares. It is valued because third parties chose to publish it, which makes it more credible than paid advertising.
- Fractional marketing team
A fractional marketing team is an outside team that works as part of an organisation's marketing function on an ongoing basis, providing several skills for less than the cost of hiring each one. The organisation's own lead sets direction; the fractional team delivers.
- GEO (generative engine optimisation)
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the practice of making a brand or organisation appear, and be described correctly, in answers written by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. It relies on clear answers, consistent facts, structured data and credible mentions elsewhere.
- Human in the loop
Human in the loop is a way of working in which people review, correct and approve AI output before it takes effect. In marketing, it means no AI-drafted post, release, reply or ad is published, sent or paid for until a responsible person has checked and approved it.
- llms.txt
llms.txt is a proposed standard for a plain-text file at the root of a website that tells AI systems which pages matter most and what each one covers. It was introduced in 2024. Support across AI companies is not yet consistent, but the file is simple to add.
- Marketing retainer
A marketing retainer is a fixed recurring fee an organisation pays an agency for ongoing work, usually monthly. Traditional retainers are often based on estimated hours; package-based retainers instead define deliverables and scope, so the client knows in advance what the fee covers.
- Personal branding
Personal branding is building an individual's professional reputation through consistent public content, typically on LinkedIn, in video and in the media. For executives and senior officials, it means a credible, recognisable voice on the topics they lead, with every word approved by them.
- Press release
A press release is an official written announcement sent to journalists, setting out news in a clear, factual format with a headline, key facts, quotes and contact details. In the Gulf, releases are usually issued in both Arabic and English for regional and international media.
- Schema markup
Schema markup is structured data added to a web page's code that tells search engines and AI systems what the page is about: an organisation, a service, a price, an article, a question and its answer. It uses the shared Schema.org vocabulary, usually written in JSON-LD.
- SEO (search engine optimisation)
SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work of improving a website so that it ranks higher in search results for relevant queries. It covers technical health, useful content, clear structure and links from credible sites, and it is the foundation that GEO builds on.
- Share of voice
Share of voice is an organisation's share of all the conversation, coverage or visibility in its category, compared with others in the same space. It can be measured across press coverage, social conversation, search results or AI answers, and is tracked over time.
- Social media moderation
Social media moderation is monitoring the comments and messages on an organisation's channels and responding, hiding or escalating them according to agreed rules. Good moderation answers routine questions quickly and sends complaints, sensitive topics and anything unusual to a person.
- Synthetic media
Synthetic media is images, video or audio created or altered by AI, such as generated scenes, AI voices or digital likenesses of people. Used responsibly, it requires written consent from anyone whose face or voice is used, and clear labelling where platforms or law require it.
- Thought leadership
Thought leadership is content that shares original expertise, experience and points of view to build authority in a field. It works when it says something specific and useful, rather than repeating general trends, and when it is published regularly by a credible, named person or organisation.
- Transcreation
Transcreation is adapting content into another language so that it keeps its meaning, tone, intent and cultural fit, rather than translating it word for word. For Arabic audiences in the Gulf, it means writing as a native writer would for that audience, not converting English sentences.
- UGC (user-generated content)
UGC, or user-generated content, is content made in the style of real customers or creators, such as reviews, unboxings or selfie videos, often used in advertising because it feels native to social platforms. Responsible UGC uses real, consenting creators and discloses paid content.
