What is GEO, and how does a GCC brand get cited by ChatGPT?
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the practice of making your brand appear, and be described correctly, in answers from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. It builds on SEO. The core is simple: publish clear, consistent, well-structured facts about your brand, and earn credible mentions elsewhere, so AI systems can find and trust them.

More people now ask an AI assistant before they search. "Which bank in the UAE has the best savings account?" "Which agency in the UAE handles government communications?" The assistant writes one answer and cites a handful of sources. If your brand is not in that answer, the buyer may never reach your website.
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. A "generative engine" is any system that writes an answer instead of showing a list of links: ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. The term was popularised by a 2023 academic paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", by researchers from Princeton University and other institutions.
How is GEO different from SEO?
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your page in search results | Get your brand named and cited inside AI answers |
| What wins | Relevance, authority, technical health | Clear answers, consistent facts, credible sources, structure |
| Unit of success | A ranking and a click | A mention, a citation and an accurate description |
| Measurement | Rankings, traffic | Citation share across target prompts |
GEO does not replace SEO. Many AI assistants draw on search indexes to find sources, so pages that rank well are more likely to be cited. Good GEO starts with good SEO.
What makes an AI assistant cite a brand?
No AI company publishes a full recipe. But research and practice point to the same factors:
- Direct answers. Pages that answer a question in the first two or three sentences are easier to quote.
- Specific, verifiable facts. Prices, locations, dates and named services are more useful to a model than slogans. The 2023 GEO paper found that adding citations, quotations and statistics to content increased its visibility in generative answers by up to 40% in its tests.
- Consistency. If your website, LinkedIn page, directory listings and press coverage all describe you the same way, a model is more confident about who you are.
- Third-party mentions. Assistants lean on sources other than your own site: press, directories, reviews and industry lists.
- Machine-readable structure. Clear headings, schema markup and fast, crawlable pages help systems understand content.
- Freshness. Visible "last updated" dates and current information matter for questions about prices or services.
What should a UAE or Saudi brand do first?
Start with an audit, then fix the basics in this order.
1. Ask the assistants. Write the 20 questions your buyers would ask, in English and Arabic. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Record whether you are mentioned, how you are described and which sources are cited.
2. Write one definition of your brand. One sentence: who you are, what you do, where, and for whom. Use it everywhere, word for word.
3. Rebuild key pages answer-first. Open each service, pricing and FAQ page with a 40 to 60 word answer to the question the page exists for.
4. Phrase headings as questions. "How much does it cost?" is a heading a model can match to a prompt. "Our approach" is not.
5. Add structured data. Use schema markup for your organisation, services, FAQs, articles and authors.
6. Allow AI crawlers. Check that your robots.txt does not block the crawlers used by AI search products, and that your pages render as HTML without depending on JavaScript.
7. Consider an llms.txt file. llms.txt is a proposed standard, introduced in 2024, for a plain-text file that tells AI systems which pages on your site matter. It is cheap to add, though support across AI companies is not yet consistent.
8. Earn mentions in the region. Coverage in UAE and Saudi media, accurate directory listings and a complete Google Business Profile all give assistants independent sources.
9. Publish original data. Surveys, benchmarks and price guides are among the content types most likely to be cited, because they cannot be found anywhere else.
10. Track it monthly. Re-run your prompt list every month and record your citation share.
Does Arabic content matter for GEO?
Yes. Many Gulf buyers ask questions in Arabic, and assistants often answer from Arabic sources when they do. Brands with only English pages rarely appear in those answers. Arabic pages should be written originally for Arabic readers, not machine-translated, and should carry the same facts as the English versions.
What can't GEO do?
GEO cannot guarantee a citation. AI answers change with the model, the wording of the prompt and the user. Anyone who promises "guaranteed ChatGPT rankings" is overselling. What GEO can do is make your brand the clearest, most consistent and best-sourced answer available, which raises the odds every month.
How does Marca approach GEO?
GEO is part of Marca's Premium and Concierge packages, from US$5,000 (AED 18,360) a month. AI agent teams research the prompts your buyers use, draft answer-first content and schema, and track citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot each month. Senior people choose the topics, check every fact and approve every page. Marca's own website is built on the same principles.
FAQ
What is GEO in marketing?
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the practice of making a brand appear and be cited correctly in answers from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO aims to rank pages in search results. GEO aims to get your brand named and cited inside AI-written answers. GEO builds on SEO.
How do I get my brand mentioned by ChatGPT?
Publish clear, answer-first pages with consistent facts, add structured data, allow AI crawlers, and earn credible mentions in press and directories. Then track your citations monthly.
How long does GEO take to work?
It varies. Changes to your own pages can be picked up within weeks by assistants that search the web live. Changes in what models "know" by default take longer.
What is llms.txt?
A proposed standard for a plain-text file at the root of a website that lists its most important pages for AI systems.
Can anyone guarantee AI citations?
No. AI answers vary by model, prompt and user. Good GEO improves the odds. It cannot guarantee the outcome.
